Christopher J. Massaro

Christopher J. Massaro

Co-Founder & Partner

Chris has more than 25 years of experience in executive search and career management, investment banking, international finance, and business operations. Chris has been entrusted with conducting leadership searches in education for prestigious K–12 independent-private schools, public schools, non-profit organizations, as well as emerging to Fortune 500 companies.

In addition to The Source Advisory, Chris serves as Senior Vice President of Management and Economics Consulting, Inc. (MAECI), an international management consulting firm as has specific experience in Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to Co-founding The Source Advisory, Mr. Massaro served as President of CJM Strategies, a private middle market investment banking firm, was a Vice President with Gottesman Company, the largest middle market investment banking firm in the U.S., and spent over 15 years as an owner and Executive Vice President of Vilotti-Puratos, a $25 million food manufacturing and distribution company. He serves on the board of directors for The Cancer Foundation for Personal Wellness, Radnor Alumni Council, and is on the Board of Trustees of Radnor Educational Foundation.  For the past 8 years, Chris has pioneered entrepreneurship and internship programs (Campus to Careers) within K-12 schools, and Mr. Massaro holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Villanova University.

The onboarding plan will provide an organized, detailed and action oriented way of integrating a new hire into the organization, and will emphasize the need for developing relationships that will be needed to be successful, as well as understanding all of the expectations of their new role.

Terry shares his expertise with private-independent schools in strategic planning and strategic financial planning, strategic performance analysis, effective school operation, fundraising, faculty evaluation and compensation, and financial aid.

Terry has been with ISM since 2002. He recently completed a three-year assignment at St. Mary’s School, California, where he served as the Head of Finance, Operations, and Advancement. During that assignment, he continued to consult for ISM.

Terry works with schools in the areas of:

  • strategic planning/strategic financial planning;
  • Strategic Performance Analysis (full-school assessment);
  • effective school operations;
  • fundraising; faculty evaluation and compensation; and
  • financial aid.

He has served more than 200 schools onsite since 2002, with many school leaders returning for additional advice year after year.

He also:

  • acts as a senior writer for ISM’s publications, including Ideas & Perspectives;
  • created the ISM FAST program (ISM’s cutting-edge financial aid tool);
  • speaks at various conferences, including NBOA, NYSAIS, CAIS, FISBO, and AISNE; and
  • leads ISM workshops and webinars.

Terry has over 30 years of experience in both the profit and not-for-profit sectors. He has expertise in all school financial matters, along with operations, safety and security, marketing, and fundraising. Because of the specialized niche of independent schools, he enjoys helping schools explore their mission statement articulation.

Terry’s professional experience includes work at two independent schools. In addition to St. Mary’s School, Terry was also at Trinity Academy of Raleigh, North Carolina, where he was a founder and served on the Board of Directors for six years, after which he was asked to become the Director of Administrative Services.

Additionally, Terry has served on the Board of several nonprofits and the vestry of two Episcopal churches. He earned a bachelor’s degree. from East Carolina University, North Carolina, and has done graduate work in finance at Regis University, Colorado. He earned the Executive designation through ISM’s Business Certification Program.

In his spare time, he is an accomplished organist and an avid antique collector.

Scott Wilson

ISM Executive Leadership Department Head and Platinum Executive Coach

Scott is a former President and Headmaster of Baylor School, TN, and enjoyed successful tenures as Head of School at both Brookstone School, GA, and Valwood School, GA. At ISM, Scott now works with School Heads and their Boards on all facets and challenges of school leadership

Scott, a 40-year leader in independent schools, joined ISM as a Platinum Executive Coach in summer 2021. Before that, he served as President and Headmaster of Baylor School, Tennessee, from 2009 to 2021.

As a Platinum Executive Coach, Scott leads a Boarding School Cohort of School Heads. He enjoys working with School Heads and their Trustees on all facets and challenges of school leadership.

Scott understands the unique demands of independent school leadership and the skills necessary for navigating headship effectively—from strategic planning to the realities of working daily with the myriad constituencies of today’s complex school world. Above all, he retains his passion for independent schools and the services they provide for their students.

Prior to his appointment at Baylor in 2009, Scott enjoyed successful tenures as Head of School at both Brookstone School, Georgia, and Valwood School, Geogria. Scott also served Hammond School, South Carolina, as a teacher, coach, admission director, and Upper School Head.

A leader in state and regional organizations himself, Scott has served as a Director for the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA), the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS), and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS).

Scott was mentored by some of the greats of the Southern independent school world, including Herb Barks at Baylor and Hammond, Bob Chambers, Billy Peebles, Randy Tucker, Kirk Walker, and many others.

Scott earned his bachelor’s degree at The University of Georgia and his master’s degree at The University of South Carolina. Scott was a Klingenstein Fellow at Columbia University’s Teachers College in 2006.

Al Cavalli

Vice President – Education – Charter Schools, Therapeutic Schools, Private Schools

Mr. Cavalli has been committed to helping children learn, grow, and succeed as a life-long passion, spanning 40 years. Al is an Education Executive with experience as an education/operations/financial consultant, that had held titles of vice president of operations, president and chief executive officer for education and mental health organizations. Most recently was President of the Independence Mission Schools and a Strategic Advisor to the Board. Previously served as CEO of the LVARCS and the former CEO/President of the Shawnee Academy and the Beacon School.

Mr. Cavalli has specific expertise and experience within the Charter School System which encompasses all aspects of school development, superior authorizer-school relations, contracts, evaluation, federal revenue management practices, charter law compliance and over compliance and technical assistance. In addition, Mr. Cavalli has significant experience with non-profit and for-profit organizations in strategic planning, organizational design, leadership, professional development, and financial viability planning. Early in Al’s career, he served as a school leader working with disadvantaged and troubled youth, gaining a special appreciation for the difficult roles of administrative and teaching staff. Al has presented and provided training on a state and local level and continues to develop partnerships with charter schools, private schools, alternative education, special education, and mental health programs.

Mr. Cavalli received an MSA from West Chester University of Pennsylvania and a BS in Accounting from Saint Joseph’s University.

Jean Williams

Search Consultant

Jean is a professional in the field of education with extensive experience in school administration and educational leadership.  She left independent private school administration in 2010 after serving in various administrative positions throughout her 34-year tenure.  These positions included:  Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs and Professional Development, Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs and Strategic Planning, and Head of Special Projects.

She also served as staff liaison to the full Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, Board Governance Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and Long Range Planning Committee. Jean has a BA in mathematics from George Washington University and Master of Education from the University of Virginia.
